Versus 5 talks about the earthly nature things that we need to “PUT TO DEATH” and versus 8-9 talk about the earthly nature things that we should get rid of as a Christian. Instead, fill our heart with the heavenly things from above, versus 12-14.
The earthly nature things that we shall never re-offence are: 1) sexual immorality, 2) impurity, 3) lust, 4) evil desire, and 5) greed (which is idolatry). These things are put to death the day that we live with Christ in God. The things that we shall be getting rid of are: 1) anger, 2) rage, 3) malice, 4) slander, 5) filthy language from your lips, and 6) do not lie to each other. Quite often the things that we get rid of might sneak back into us. For example, we get rid of a worn out jacket, then we went to a garbage bin to find ourself another worn out jacket. We just end up with a different jacket but it is still a worn out jacket. If we put something to death, then those things will not and shall not re-appear in our life.
Then how to avoid going back to our old self, the problem is when we cleanup the earthly things from our heart, we did not fill it with the “Things From Above”. The things from above are: 1) compassion, 2) kindness, 3) humility, 4) gentleness, 5) patience, and 6) bear with each other and forgive one another. All these things are not separated on it’s own. Rather they shall be united perfectly, which means we cannot just have compassion and not having kindness or having gentleness and patience but will not forgive one another. To unite these good things all together perfectly is through “LOVE”.
